UNESA Students Initiate Muslim Clothing Business Design with Batik

Surabaya - The UNESA student team won third place in the Business Plan 8th Sharia Economic Fair 2022 at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (Uinsuka) at the end of last September. In the competition, they initiated a fashion business entitled "True Love Collection Muslim Casual Fashion".

The team was named D'Wana, which consisted of Muhammad Syahrul Rizki Okina and Deswita Ardyagarani from the Biology department and Khusmawati from Fashion Design. Syahrul said the business idea stemmed from complaints from the Muslim community that it was increasingly difficult to find Muslim clothing that was contemporary but shari'a in the sense of covering the parts that should be covered.

“In addition, many people lack awareness of fashion. Now many are just wearing the hijab, for example, but instead show certain body parts. It's like being tight, hijab that doesn't cover the chest and so on," he explained.

Syahrul said that participating in the national level championship was easy and difficult, because it required maximum preparation, especially during the final round. "When facing an opponent, of course, you need innovative thinking in presentation, and that is a challenge," he said.

Deswita, another team member explained that the advantages of their product apart from being affordable and high quality, the use of designs by using batik as the basic design will promote local wisdom. "We combine a trending design with a batik base that will make people interested, especially when there are still few products like this on the market," he explained.

He added that the design chosen was batik from the East Java area, which focused on Lamongan and Kediri. According to him, the use and selection of materials in packaging is very necessary because apart from protecting goods from damage, it is also important for customers at first glance when the product is received. "We will continue to come up with ideas or produce the types of clothing that are needed by the community," said Deswita.
