Tumpak Sewu Projected to Become New Identity for Lumajang Batik
Lumajang - The beauty of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, long known as one of the flagship tourist destinations in Lumajang Regency, is being promoted as a fresh source of inspiration for developing the region’s creative economy.
Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati has invited batik business players to harness the area’s natural and cultural wealth as a source of creativity in creating batik motifs with a distinct Lumajang character.
According to her, batik is not only a cultural heritage that needs to be preserved, but also holds significant economic value if continuously developed through innovation and creativity.
“Batik is not just a cultural heritage, but also has great economic value. I invite batik entrepreneurs in Lumajang to create motifs inspired by Tumpak Sewu as one of the region’s iconic tourist attractions,” said Indah Amperawati in Lumajang Regency, East Java Province, on Thursday (18/6/2026).
She believes the high tourist interest in the Tumpak Sewu area presents an opportunity for MSMEs to produce items that have a strong connection to the local identity. Batik motifs inspired by the tourist destination are expected to enrich Lumajang’s range of signature products while increasing their competitiveness in the market.
She added that the development of the creative economy requires collaboration across various sectors, including tourism, culture, and MSMEs. Through this synergy, local potentials can be transformed into products that not only have aesthetic value but also high economic value.
“When tourism grows, the local economy must also move forward. We want tourists who come to Lumajang to not only enjoy the natural beauty, but also to get to know and take home signature local products that carry their own stories and identity,” she said.
Indah explained that batik motifs inspired by Tumpak Sewu can serve as an effective promotional medium for the region, as they introduce Lumajang’s natural wealth through the community’s creative works.
In addition to strengthening cultural identity, the initiative also provides space for artisans to continue innovating and creating products that are relevant to market trends without abandoning local wisdom values.
Amid growing attention to creative economy-based products, batik with a strong local identity is expected to deliver added value for business players while expanding marketing opportunities for Lumajang’s MSME products.
Through collaboration between the tourism and creative economy sectors, the Lumajang Regency Government hopes that the area’s natural potential will not only serve as a tourist attraction but also become a source of inspiration capable of sustainably driving the local economy.
