Wonogiren Batik Festival, an Effort to Maintain the Heritage of Our Ancestors in Wonogiri

WONOGIRI — Dozens of batik artisans spread across a number of sub-districts in Wonogiri gathered at the Giri Krida Bakti Square, Saturday (1/10/2022). They were involved as participants in the Coffee and Batik Festival organized by the Wonogiri Regency Government.

The original Wonogiri batik is known as Wonogiren. The mention is also the name of the motif.

The uniqueness of the Wonogiren batik motif is the presence of the night material which is deliberately broken down and spread into the fabric. It is not clear who initiated the idea of solving that night because there is no supporting data.

The majority of batik craftsmen in today's era only inherit the business of their parents or great-grandparents, including inheriting how to make Wonogiren batik motifs.

In addition to inheriting the production of Wonogiren batik motifs, the batik craftsmen in Wonogiri are also developing their businesses. Some are creative by making splashed batik, eco-printing, classics, or even combining motifs with one another. They have to do this so that the batik industry in Wonogiri can survive.

One example is in Pucung Village, Kismantoro District. The village is known for its splashed batik products made by people with disabilities. Until now, there were 10 people with disabilities in Pucung Village who worked on ciprat batik.

The splattered batik made by people with disabilities in Pucung Village, which was started in 2018, is still surviving today. Its fans are increasingly widespread, to outside Java and the support of the community and the Wonogiri Regency Government is an important factor that ciprat batik still exists.

The Head of the Pucung Ciprat Batik Management, Yoyok Ernowo, a splash batik crafter from a disabled person also started his creation by combining splashed batik and written batik.

“We created the splash coloring. Not just one color but a combination. For example, red and blue are graded. That way, of course, there will be price variations,” he told Solopos.com, Saturday.

Splashed batik also began to be developed by other batik craftsmen in Wonogiri. Yoyok admitted that he had no problem with this because the splashed batik did not come from Wonogiri but from the Special School (SLB) in Semarang.

On the other hand, he believes that the ciprat batik in Pucung Village has a difference from other batik artisans, namely that all of the craftsmen are people with disabilities.

One of the other splash batik craftsmen in Wonogiri is Suratmi, a resident of Timang Hamlet, Wonokerto Village, Wonogiri District. He has developed a combination of stamped and written batik splashed since 2020.

Even though he has only been developing his batik business for two years, Suratmi admits that he has succeeded in reaching the batik buying and selling market outside Wonogiri. When selling, Suratmi uses social media (medsos).

The head of the Wonogiren Batik Community, Aris Klobik, said that the main needs of batik craftsmen are market certainty and the creativity of craftsmen. That way, he ensures that businesses in the batik sector in Wonogiri can survive.

As is known, the Wonogiri Regency Government held a Coffee and Batik Festival at the Giri Krida Bakti Wonogiri Square, Saturday-Sunday (1-2/10/2022). The festival was held because in Wonogiri there are coffee and batik centers that are well known to the public.

The festival is held to coincide with International Coffee Day which is commemorated on October 1 and National Batik Day on October 2. The festival also aims to promote the original Wonogiri coffee and batik products.

Citing information from the official Instagram account for the Protocol and Communication Division of the Wonogiri Regency Government, @humas_wonogiri, Tuesday (13/9/2022), the potential for Wonogiri coffee is in eight sub-districts.

Respectively, Ndorog Coffee (Girimarto District), Jatipurno District, Slogohimo District, Bulukerto District, Blegosari Coffee (Puhpelem), Brenggolo Coffee (Jatiroto District), Karangtengah Coffee, Ngroto Coffee (Tirtomoyo).
