Batik Full of Meaning at the G20 Summit

Indonesia became the center of world attention during the G20 Summit on November 15-16 in Bali. For almost a year, the G20 Presidency series took place in several cities in Indonesia, and the climax was the Summit in Bali, on 15-16 November.

The side that also attracts attention from the activities which also involve various Ministries is the unique and distinctive thing from the Archipelago, namely clothing made from Indonesian fabrics or textiles worn by the Ministers of the Advanced Indonesian Cabinet.

Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, Sunday (13/11/2022) at the Finance and Health Hackathon 2022 event at the Mulia Hotel, Nusa Dua, appeared wearing a top made of white Sulawesi Book Woven material, colored gold and with a raindrop pattern. Combined with black trousers with zippers tucked under the ankles and complemented by white sneakers.

Previously, at the launch of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Framework and Manual at the Movenpick Hotel, Jimbaran, Bali, Saturday afternoon (12/11/2022), Sri Mulyani appeared wearing a top made from Tidore Woven, North Maluku with the Barakati pattern and a combination dark green, light gray and black combined with black trousers.

According to Leni Nurlaini, Coordinator of G20 leadership and logistics services at the Ministry of Finance (Ministry of Finance), all the clothes worn by the Minister of Finance are symbols of all Indonesian local fabrics or fabrics.

"During the G20 Presidency event, the Minister of Finance wore Indonesian literature which was full of meaning. We display local fabrics as a form of concern for empowering MSMEs so they can penetrate the global market. Through the clothes worn by the Minister of Finance, it is a walking display case for Indonesian fabrics in the eyes of the world," said Leni to the G20 Communication and Media Team, Monday (11/14/2022).

Leni also explained, during the implementation of the G20 starting from the side event to the peak event, not all levels of the Ministry of Finance also wore clothing made from Indonesian textiles, ranging from Javanese Batik, Sumatran Weaving, Kalimantan, Papua to Sulawesi. Especially at the G20 peak event in Bali later, Ministry of Finance employees will wear white Toraja woven local cloth.

The white book weave with gold accents and a raindrop pattern is a symbol of independence and hope. Then the Barakati motif symbolizes the side of the Sultanate which overshadows the community in all aspects of life.

The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan at the Ready to Welcome G20 Press Conference at the Media Center, Westin, Nusa Dua Bali, Saturday (12/11/2022), also wore Batik Written with the Sidomukti Garuda motif, a combination of brown, gold, white warrants and black.

The Sidomukti Batik motif, or commonly called Sawitan cloth, is made from Natural Soga, and has a combined meaning of Garuda bird elements and plant elements. Its meaning is very deep related to the source of life. The Garuda element in Javanese is called Lar which symbolizes valor and authority.

The Minister of Health, Budi Sadikin, who was present at the B20 Summit Talk show at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), Sunday (11/13/2022) wore a long-sleeved batik shirt with a combination of Mega Mendung, Chrysanthemum flowers and Suplir leaves motifs.

The Mega Mendung motif symbolizes the rain-bearing cloud which means fertility and life-giving. This Batik motif is related to the Chinese nation in Cirebon, Sunan Gunung Jati who married a Chinese woman named Ong Tie.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno at the B20 Summit Indonesia 2022 event in Nusa Dua, Bali on Sunday (13/11/22) wore a shirt and Udeng or a purple headband made from Endek Bali.

Endek is a typical Balinese woven fabric, of which several types are unique, from the sacred to reflecting natural nuances. In its history, Endek Cloth began to develop since 1975, during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong in Gelgel Klungkung. Since 1985 until now Endek cloth has grown rapidly and is even favored by foreign tourists.

At the Group of 20 Summit on the Indonesian island of Bali, global leaders appeared to put politics aside, at least for one night.

This is the 17th year that the leaders of the world's 20 largest economies have met. It began, as usual, with a welcome meal, this time in the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.

Despite the fact that world leaders were meeting to address topics such as increasing inflation, the Ukraine conflict, and conflicts between the US and China, they set aside formalities for the outdoor supper.

They all donned outfits that offered a reference to the host nation, in this instance long-sleeved batik shirts coloured in floral or botanical designs, as is customary at these gatherings.

Some politicians appeared to have coordinated their outfits, possibly to represent political allegiances.

For example, both UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wore bright red shirts and posed for a photo with Fifa President Giovanni Infantino.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who went on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, donned a blue shirt that coincidentally matched the one worn by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who came with his wife, Peng Liyuan.

To avoid any potential fashion faux pas, US President Joe Biden avoided the event entirely. The one leader who completely missed the mark was, ironically, France's President Emmanuel Macron, who disregarded the dress code and came up in a white shirt coupled with fitted pants.

Sunak, on the other hand, held loyal to his love of expensive shoes, wearing a pair of Tod's Gommino loafers in blue suede, after previously making news for wearing a similar pair from Prada when visiting a building site in the UK.
