Rejuvenate Batik Through the Tegalan Batik Festival

Talang - Tegal Regent Umi Azizah invites the younger generation to grow their interest and love for Tegalan batik as an archipelago text. This message was conveyed by Umi when opening the Tegalan Batik Festival 2022 event at the Talang Nahdlatul Ulama Branch Representative Council (MWC NU) building, Sunday (06/11/2022) morning.

In Umi's view, organizing this festival is a way for batik activists to preserve intangible cultural heritage, to promote batik, to stimulate the development of the Tegalan batik industry amid the rush of contemporary imported textiles.

Meanwhile, for MSME actors, this kind of event is a space to maintain product existence, marketing and develop creativity by printing new, fresher and more contemporary works.

He also hopes that the public can instill a sense of pride in using Tegalan batik products as domestic works of art and reduce the use of imported products, including batik-patterned textiles.

"Come on, we support it, we encourage the creative work of batik craftsmen and batik designers. Give appreciation by buying and uploading it on social media. We introduce Tegalan batik which is no less famous than Pekalongan batik, Batik Cirebon and Batik Solo which are already legendary," he said.

Umi also revealed that currently there are more than 1,091 Tegalan batik motifs that have been identified and registered in the catalog of the Tegal District Office of Cooperatives, SMEs and Trade.

In response, the Director of Harapan Bersama Polytechnic, Agung Hendarto, said that the holding of the Tegalan Batik Festival 2022 aims to support the establishment of a regional identity for Tegal Regency to compete in national and international markets.

"It would be even better if an event like this could become one of the icons that is held regularly every year, so that in the future it can become the identity of Tegal Regency," said Agung.

The holding of this event is the result of his collaboration with the Regional Development Planning Agency for Research and Development (Bapedda and Litbang) of Tegal Regency through research activities on the local Tegalan Batik culture.

A number of supporting activities that helped enliven this festival were art creation competitions, drawing and coloring competitions, creative video content competitions, and fashion show competitions.
