Sekar Arum Sari Motif Batik, Indonesian Hajj Congregation Batik
Jakarta - Sekar Arum Sari Motif Batik, Indonesian Hajj Congregation Batik is the result of a batik design competition from the Directorate General of Hajj and Umrah (PHU) Ministry of Religion. The Ministry of Religion invites designers, fashion designers and interested parties to take part in this competition.
"The batik uniform motif worn by Indonesian pilgrims during the 1444 H/2023 AD Hajj operations has been used since 2011. We consider it necessary to refresh it with a new motif that is more innovative, and reflects Indonesian culture, culture and identity," explained Director General of PHU Hilman Latief in Jakarta, Friday (25/8/2023).
The committee, said Hilman, involved five juries chaired by the Ministry of Religion's Dharma Wanita Association (DWP) Advisor Eny Retno Purwaningtyas. The other four members of the jury are Komaruddin Kudiya (Chair of the Association of Indonesian Batik Craftsmen and Entrepreneurs or APPBI), Irna Mutiara (Fashion Designer), Monika Jufry (Fashion Designer), and Yufie Safitri Sobari (Fashion Designer and Academic).
The Sekar Arum Sari Motif Batik was named the winner of the Indonesian Hajj Congregation Batik Design Competition. This determination is contained in the Decree of the Director General of Hajj and Umrah Organization Number 370 of 2023 concerning the Determination of Winners and Finalists in the Indonesian Hajj Congregation Batik Design Competition.
"After going through a series of assessment processes, the Jury determined the Batik Motif Sekar Arum Sari by Sony Adi Nugroho as the winner. "The jury's determination was then expressed in the form of a Decree from the Director General of PHU," explained the Director of Domestic Hajj Services, Directorate General of PHU, Saiful Mujab, in Jakarta, Monday (11/12/2023).
The Sekar Arum Sari motif is inspired by white jasmine, kawung motif, truntum motif, songket and weaving motifs, and the garuda bird. The philosophy of this motif is that the Indonesian national puspa is depicted with white jasmine flowers which symbolize purity, majesty, simplicity, sincerity, beauty and humility.
Apart from the winners, the jury has also determined nine finalists, namely: 1) Ahmat Filasuf (Ksatria Bhakti Imani Motif), 2) Bagio Wijaya (Flower Sketch Motif, Wayang Mountain and Garuda Bird), 3) Bayu Aria Widhi Kristanto (National Wings Motif ), 4) Deki Sandi Herdianto (Attara Jagat Marjan Motif), 5) Ernas Juliasta (Puspa Bangsa Puspa Pesona Batik Motif), 6) Saftiyaningsih Ken Atik (MAHAJ Motif), 7) Satya Wiragraha (Indonesian Blessing Motif), 8) Sania Sari (Universal Harmony Motif), and 9) Tri Asayani (Khidmat Archipelago Motif).

Directorate General of Hajj and Umrah Organizing.
"The winner is obliged to give all copyright of the Jemaah Haji Indonesia batik uniform design work to the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia cq. "Directorate General of Hajj and Umrah Organizing," explained Saiful Mujab
"The winner received a certificate and prize money amounting to IDR 78,000,000, while the nine finalists each received a certificate and money in lieu of competition work amounting to IDR 5,000,000. "Taxes are borne by the organizers," he said.
The new purple batik for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims has the Sekar Arum Sari motif, which is inspired by white jasmine, kawung motifs, truntum motifs, songket and weaving motifs, and the garuda bird. This motif takes the Indonesian national puspa philosophy which is depicted with white jasmine flowers which symbolize purity, majesty, simplicity, sincerity, beauty and humility.
Meanwhile, Director General of Hajj and Umrah Organizers Hilman Latief explained that this new batik will replace the previous batik which has been used since 2011.
"Previously, batik had been used for more than 10 years, and apparently did not fully represent Indonesian identity. Many people don't recognize the Indonesian batik uniform. "Because of that, we are holding a competition for new batik," he said.
He also explained that batik uniforms would be produced using the stamp method, involving many MSMEs who met the requirements according to the standards set by the Ministry of Religion.
"It is estimated that each congregation requires 3 meters of cloth for one batik, so around 600 KM if stretched. "This means that many MSMEs will be involved in making it. This is also a form of our concern for MSMEs," he said.
