Designer Didiet Maulana Admires Tanah Liek Batik at Kriyanusa 2024
Jakarta - Famous Indonesian Fashion Designer Didiet Maulana expressed his admiration for the increasingly aggressive batik UMKM actors in the country in expanding their markets abroad. One thing that caught the attention of this young designer was Batik Tanah Liek (Clay) from West Sumatra.
He expressed this admiration when visiting the Padang City stand at the 2024 Kriyanusa Exhibition which took place at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Wednesday (8/28/2024).
"This Tanah Liek Batik is unique and interesting," said Didiet while chatting with the Acting Chairperson of the Padang City Dekranasda, Mrs. Vanny Andree Algamar.
According to Didiet, the Tanah Liek Batik motifs on clothing, scarves, sarongs, and other products have their own characteristics that are not found in any other region in Indonesia. The motifs are also interesting by taking inspiration from the richness of Minangkabau natural culture combined with contemporary (modern) motifs.
"This Tanah Liek Batik is very promising. Hopefully it will continue to exist and continue to expand its market," added the designer who recently successfully designed the Indonesian contingent's costume at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Olympics.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Vanny admitted that she was grateful that the Tanah Liek Batik displayed at the Padang City stand at the 2024 Kriyanusa Exhibition received praise from the famous Indonesian designer Didiet Maulana.
"We chose Tanah Liek Batik to be displayed at the Kriyanusa Exhibition because of its excellence in Padang City. Alhamdulillah, it received praise and attention from Mas Didiet Maulana," she said.
Tanah Liek Batik is a type of batik cloth originating from Minangkabau. The making of this batik uses clay as a dye, with the process of making the cloth soaked for a week with clay, then washed and given natural coloring from plants.
The resulting motifs consist of traditional Minangkabau motifs such as siriah in carano, kaluak paku, kuciang tidua, batuang kayu, tari piring and kipas. Currently, new motifs are also introduced such as the Tabuik motif, Jam Gadang and Rumah Gadang.
Batik Tanah Liek was first established by Hj. Wirda Hanim since 1995. The gallery is currently located at Jl. Sawahan Dalam No. 33, Padang Timur District, Padang City. There are also branches in Pesisir Selatan and Dharmasraya Regencies.
Batik Tanah Liek has won a number of awards, one of which is from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
