ISI Students Train Residents of Karimunjawa Village, Jepara to Make Ecoprint Batik

Karimunjawa Jepara - Students of the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Surakarta carry out a Real Work Lecture (KKN) in Jatikerep Hamlet, Karimunjawa Village, Karimunjawa District, Jepara Regency. They train residents to make ecoprint batik. Apart from being a new innovation for the local village, ecoprint batik is made to take advantage of Karimunjawa's wealth.

One of the KKN members, Nadia Puspitaningsih, said that the ecoprint method of batik training was held for the first time in Karimunjawa. Karimunjawa itself is rich with plants that can be used to make ecoprint batik. For example, teak leaves, papaya, cassava, moringa (merunggai), and some flowers there can be used.

In addition, they also teach the people of Karimunjawa to use mangrove waste as natural dyes. Namely, using mangrove stems that are dried and then boiled until a liquid color appears. “We take advantage of what is around the community. Like in Jatikerep Hamlet, there are many teak trees here. So the ingredients are very easy to get," said Nadia, Saturday (20/8/2022).

According to him, the community is not so much trouble. It's just that, because it's the first time trying out the ecoprint batik method, the color results are still not perfect. Even so, the results of the exercise are still presented to the wider community. Like a scarf, it will be exhibited during the Barikan Kubro Tradition. "Later we will also make it again in the t-shirt media. Later it can be sold," said Nadia.

Through this ecoprint batik program, Nadia and her group hope that there will be alternative economic sources for the people of Karimunjawa. On the other hand, making batik in this way is the same as taking care of and taking advantage of the environment and its potential.
