Batik Gedog From Tuban East Java

Batik Gedog is the name of batik originating from Tuban, East Java. The name Gedog is inspired by the sound of kemplongan. Likewise with the naming of the Gedog woven from Tuban Regency. The manufacturing process is carried out traditionally, making this craft product unique so that it is in demand all the way to Japan and the Netherlands.


"This is our uniqueness. Starting from growing cotton as a basic material, spun into yarn, woven, made batik, all of this is done traditionally by the hands of the people in this village, no machines are used at all," said the craftsman and owner of the Mandiri Mekar Melati Gallery in Margorejo Village, Tuban Regency, Nanik Hariningsih.

Margorejo Village, Tuban Regency is one of the Foreign Exchange Villages in East Java with products in the form of Gedog weaving and batik crafts. This product is sold at a price range of IDR 150 thousand to IDR 5 million.

"Regarding the quantity, we usually send 1 item of white gedog woven per month, 400 pieces sent via exporters. For the motives that are most in demand, it depends on demand, there are heritage motifs, there are also development motives that follow the market," explained Nanik.

One thing that becomes Nanik's main concern is creating employment opportunities for women in her village. There are 35 casual daily workers and 65 permanent daily workers.

"Alhamdulillah, we can create jobs. Here, the average working mothers to grandparents in the area around here. Thank God, they can help the family's economy so that kitchen smoke can billow every day and also make the women here work," said Nanik.
